JN Darby was a man of immense achievement, scholarship and influence. He wrestled with his Bible to become the leading light of the Plymouth Brethren, the mind behind dispensationalism, much-travelled church planter and translator of the Scriptures. His 19th century expectation of the restoration of the Jews to Palestine proved prescient, but his doctrine of separation from corrupt institutions was more problematic.
